Strelitzia (Bird of Paradise)

Strelitzia, commonly known as the Bird of Paradise, is a dramatic tropical plant admired for its large, banana-like leaves and bold, architectural shape. Native to South Africa, it brings an instant touch of the tropics to any interior. It loves plenty of light, warmth and humidity, and with the right care can grow into a stunning statement plant.

Light & Placement

• Bright, indirect light is ideal. A spot close to a large, sunny window will encourage strong, healthy growth.

• Some gentle direct sunlight is beneficial, particularly in the morning or late afternoon.

• Avoid very harsh midday sun initially, as this can scorch the leaves.

• Rotate the pot every few weeks to encourage balanced growth.

• Keep away from cold draughts and radiators, which can cause the leaves to dry out and split.

Watering & Soil

• Water thoroughly when the top few centimetres of soil feel dry.

• Allow excess water to drain away and never leave the plant sitting in water, as this can lead to root rot.

• Use a rich, well-draining potting mix to keep the roots healthy while retaining some moisture.

• Keep humidity levels up by misting occasionally, grouping plants together or placing the plant near a humidifier.

• Wipe the large leaves gently with a damp cloth to remove dust and help them absorb as much light as possible.

Don't worry if the leaves naturally split over time — this is completely normal for a Bird of Paradise and is part of what gives it its distinctive tropical character.
