Fatsia japonica (Japanese Aralia)

Fatsia japonica, commonly known as the Japanese Aralia, is a beautiful evergreen shrub loved for its large, glossy, hand-shaped leaves and lush, tropical appearance. Originally from Japan and southern Korea, it is surprisingly hardy and makes an excellent choice for adding year-round structure and greenery to gardens, patios and shaded outdoor spaces. Easy to care for and tolerant of a range of conditions, Fatsia is a wonderful choice for both experienced gardeners and beginners.

Light & Placement

• Partial shade or dappled shade is ideal and helps keep the leaves looking lush and healthy.

• Tolerates full shade better than many other evergreen plants, although growth may be slower.

• Avoid strong, prolonged direct sunlight, particularly in summer, as this can scorch the large leaves.

• Choose a sheltered position protected from strong winds, which can tear or damage the leaves.

• Suitable for pots or borders, making it a versatile choice for patios, balconies and gardens.

Watering & Soil

• Water regularly during the growing season, particularly while the plant is establishing or during warm, dry periods.

• Allow the surface of the soil to dry slightly between watering, but don't allow it to become completely dry for long periods.

• Use a fertile, well-draining soil that retains some moisture without becoming waterlogged.

• Ensure good drainage if growing in a pot, and never allow the roots to sit in excess water.

• Mulch around the base in spring to help retain moisture and add nutrients to the soil.
