Pennisetum alopecuroides ‘Little Hameln’ (Fountain Grass)

Pennisetum alopecuroides ‘Little Hameln’, commonly known as Fountain Grass, is a compact ornamental grass loved for its soft, arching foliage and beautiful bottlebrush-like flower spikes. Smaller and more compact than many other Pennisetum varieties, ‘Little Hameln’ is perfect for adding movement, texture and year-round interest to borders, pots and patios. Its fluffy flower heads appear through summer and autumn, creating a beautiful, natural display.

Light & Placement

  • Full sun is ideal and will encourage strong, upright growth and plentiful flowers.

  • A little partial shade is tolerated, although flowering may be reduced.

  • Choose a sheltered position where possible, particularly in exposed gardens.

  • Suitable for pots and borders, making it a versatile choice for patios, balconies and garden beds.

  • Give it plenty of room to spread as the fine foliage forms a naturally rounded clump.

Watering & Soil

  • Water regularly during the first growing season while the plant establishes.

  • Once established, it is relatively drought tolerant, although it will appreciate watering during prolonged hot, dry weather.

  • Allow the soil to dry slightly between watering and avoid waterlogged conditions.

  • Use a fertile, well-draining soil to encourage healthy growth.

  • Cut back the old foliage to around 10–15 cm in late winter or early spring before new growth begins.

‘Little Hameln’ is a wonderfully versatile ornamental grass, bringing soft texture and gentle movement to the garden. Its feathery flower spikes catch the light beautifully and remain attractive into autumn, making it a lovely choice for both contemporary and traditional planting schemes.
