Pennisetum alopecuroides ‘Rubrum’ (Purple Fountain Grass)

Pennisetum alopecuroides ‘Rubrum’, commonly known as Purple Fountain Grass, is a striking ornamental grass admired for its long, arching leaves in rich burgundy and its elegant, feathery flower spikes. Its deep colouring creates a beautiful contrast against green foliage and makes it a fantastic statement plant for borders, containers and patios. Fast-growing and full of movement, ‘Rubrum’ adds texture and a touch of drama to any outdoor space.

Light & Placement

  • Full sun is ideal and will bring out the richest colour in the foliage.

  • Some partial shade is tolerated, although the leaves may appear greener and flowering can be reduced.

  • Choose a sheltered position protected from strong winds, which can damage the long foliage.

  • Ideal for pots, borders and patios, where its graceful shape can be enjoyed up close.

  • Allow plenty of space for the foliage to arch naturally as the plant matures.

Watering & Soil

  • Water regularly while the plant is establishing, particularly during warm or dry weather.

  • Once established, it is moderately drought tolerant, but will benefit from watering during prolonged dry spells.

  • Allow the soil to dry slightly between watering and avoid waterlogged conditions.

  • Use a fertile, well-draining soil to encourage strong, healthy growth.

  • Cut back old foliage in late winter or early spring before new growth appears.

With its dramatic burgundy foliage and soft, bottlebrush-like flower spikes, Pennisetum ‘Rubrum’ brings colour, movement and texture to the garden. It looks particularly beautiful when planted alongside lighter green grasses or flowering plants, creating a bold and contemporary display.
